Description
Live Blood of the High Plains...What would the Texas high plains be without storms and rain? Add some lightning and we have a real sky show. This land is flat, dry and parched with not much rain. Most of it goes to the east into Oklahoma and on from there.-------------------------
This image was taken in the Texas panhandle.
I live on what is called the Llano Estacado, named by Spanish explorers centuries ago as they crossed this flat tabletop land in their search for the cities of gold. An old encampment was found several miles south of here in a canyon.----------------------
What water we have is brought by rain and snow runoff and the rare summer storm. The weather here is extreme, going from 20 degrees to over 100 degrees in a matter of hours. And the wind is a constant, bringing in warm air to dry the land.-----------------
People that settled this area were hardy and tough and hoped to conquer this area. It is still inhospitable and only the tough and smart survive by their wits. This is mostly ranchland and ranches must be large to feed the cattle as their livelihood depends on the rain in the summer and snow in the winter.
