Description
I took this image of this male golden fronted woodpecker yesterday in Palo Duro Canyon SP, Texas. What fun birds they are to watch. They like to hide behind the tree trunks. A female was also there with him but there was at least one other male. I was testing out my new bird lens, a Nikon 200-500mm, think it's going to work, the pictures were tack sharp.
The golden-fronted woodpecker is a North American woodpecker. Its preferred habitat is mesquite and riparian woodlands. It is distributed from Texas and Oklahoma in the United States through Mexico to Honduras and northern Nicaragua. Cooke listed this species as an abundant resident of the lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas, in 1884.
