I was driving along hunting birds to photograph and saw the ears of this jack rabbit backlit by the setting sun. I stopped hoping to get a picture of the ears. He wasn't too sure about what I was doing but stayed hidden until I drove away. This was taken in the Texas panhandle.
The Black-tailed Jackrabbit is a large, long-eared rabbit of the open grasslands and desert scrub of the West. Its fur is a dark buff color peppered with black, and its black-tipped ears are almost the same length as its hind feet.
Life History
The Black-tailed Jackrabbit spends most of its day resting in a scratched-out hollow in the ground. They are generally most active at dusk and throughout the night. Under the cover of darkness, they can forage with relative security.
Jackrabbits are strict vegetarians. During the spring and summer, they feed on clover, alfalfa and other abundant greens. During the lean fall and winter months, they subsist on woody and dried vegetation.
I have recently gotten into bird photography and really love taking their pictures. I also have a passion for clouds and the Texas landscape when the storms come rolling in. Lightning is a favorite subject during storms. I love macro photography and all the hidden detail in these amazing closeups. My arsenal consists of all Nikon cameras, flash units and Nikkor lenses. I have won monthly contests at Better Photo and I have also been published in Cowboy Magazine and Cowboys and Indians Magazine. PLEASE DO NOT PIN IMAGES TO PINTEREST.....THANK YOU

Stuart Harrison
I gotta tell you Karen. You are one of the most well rounded photographers, I've come across in my 40 year career. You live in the panhandle of Texas (no insult impied) but as such you have limited photographic opportunities, that I have here in Florida. But the reality is that you take what is available to you and turn it into images that are labeled as ART. Think about think about the 'jack rabbit' is a perfect example, 99% would pull the trigger, only if they could capture the entire "rabbit'. You on the other had created an image that no one has ever seen before. The sunlight through the ears, whiskers etc..I Apologize for carrying on.L/F
Karen Slagle replied:
Well bless your heart, Stuart...no apologies needed. Your kind comments just made my day and I'm trying to not let my head swell up...lol. Aside from that, you are so correct, the possibilities here are difficult to say the least and the heat we are having is awful...I really do appreciate your comments...thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Cathy Kovarik
