Description
Outflow boundary
Storms and tornados were churning across the eastern Texas panhandle yesterday. This is an outflow boundary from those storms as they raced from east to west, showing the winds high in the atmosphere in the upswept clouds. I took this at sundown under very strong winds, I could barely stand up to take this image.
Early summer is the most exciting time of year because we get the most awesome clouds and storms here, plus tornados and lightning.
An outflow boundary, also known as a gust front, is a storm-scale or mesoscale boundary separating thunderstorm-cooled air (outflow) from the surrounding air; similar in effect to a cold front, with passage marked by a wind shift and usually a drop in temperature and a related pressure jump.
